What are you thankful for?

This year has been an interesting mix of good and bad events. Still, I’m thankful.

Here’s a list of some of the people and things that I’m grateful for.

1. I’m still here.

I’m glad to be alive.

I turned 40 earlier this year. Many people worry or complain about getting older (myself included).

I’m still happy to have the opportunity to grow older. I’m grateful that I’ve been given more time to be with the people I love as well as more time to write, help others, and meet new people.

2. You.

Thank you for reading this post. And thank you if you’ve read any of my other blog posts.

I want to help other writers share their stories and their work with as many people as possible. And I hope my future blog posts will continue to help and inspire you.

Also, thanks to those of you who subscribe to my weekly email newsletter and to those who are a part of this blog’s online communities on Facebook and Twitter.

3. Writing Groups

I’m thankful to know other writers and bloggers. I really enjoy being a part of local writing groups and online writers groups. I’m a better writer and a better person for knowing these great people. These groups share a lot of advice on how to write better, and how to connect with readers and clients.

It’s so wonderful to know that no writer has to be alone while trying to create good work.

4. Learning New Things

I learned how to set a schedule that helped me become a more productive writer and blogger. This allowed me to go from monthly blog posts to weekly posts.

I’ve also spent the past month learning about Medium, a website that allows writers and bloggers to share their blog posts. I’ve had a good first month on Medium and I will share lessons learned from using this website in a future blog post.

5. The Helpers

I’ve always loved this quote from Mr. Rogers.

We have seen a lot of tragedies and scandals in the news this year, including mass shootings, powerful hurricanes as well as numerous reports of abuse and harassment. It’s heartbreaking.

But, I’m thankful for the people who are trying to help. I’m grateful for the people who are trying to be a part of the change that they want to see in their workplaces, in their communities, in their country and in the world.

I admire our first responders and volunteers who are still helping people rebuild their lives while coping with injuries and losses from acts of violence or from a hurricane. I’m thankful for those who are finding the courage to speak out against abuse as part of #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo and other movements.

The people and things on this list work together to reflect one of the things I’m most thankful for:

Hope.

These five reasons give me hope for the future, even while facing life and society’s problems.

I hope this week finds you in a good place, enjoying time with friends and family.

Happy Thanksgiving!
